8.2. Exposure Controls

Overview

This section outlines the necessary exposure controls and personal protective equipment (PPE) required to ensure safe handling of chemical substances and mixtures. Controls should be implemented according to the COSHH Hierarchy of Controls.

Engineering Controls

Ventilation Requirements

  • Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) to draw contaminated air away from source
  • Natural ventilation (e.g., outdoor work)
  • Mechanical ventilation systems
  • Air changes per hour specifications

Note: Vague terms like 'good' or 'adequate' ventilation should not be used - specific requirements must be provided.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

General Requirements

  • All workplace PPE must bear CE mark
  • Regular inspection and replacement required
  • Written records of PPE issued must be maintained
  • Equipment must be specified in sufficient detail (kind, type, class)
  • Based on workplace risk assessment

Hand Protection

  • Typical or minimum breakthrough times
  • Consider factors affecting performance:
    • Abrasion resistance
    • Chemical compatibility
