SECTION 1.4: Emergency Telephone Number

The Emergency Telephone Number section of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) provides critical contact information for use in case of emergencies involving the substance or mixture. This section ensures that users can quickly access expert advice to mitigate risks and respond effectively to incidents.

Requirements for Emergency Telephone Numbers

  • The emergency number must be operational and accessible at all times (24/7 availability is recommended)
  • The service must be provided in the official language(s) of the country where the product is marketed, unless otherwise specified by local regulations
  • The number must connect to a competent person or service capable of providing specific advice on emergency health responses related to the product
  • If the service is not available outside certain hours, this limitation must be clearly stated

Official Emergency Services

In addition to company-provided emergency numbers, national or regional poison centers and emergency response services may also be listed. These include:

  • National Poison Control Centers
  • Independent emergency response services contracted by the supplier
  • Company-operated emergency response hotlines

Best Practices for Emergency Telephone Numbers

Critical Information Requirements

The following details must be included in this section:

  • Full telephone number: Include international dialing codes if applicable
  • Operating hours: Specify if the service is not available 24/7
  • Languages supported: Indicate the languages in which assistance is available
  • Service provider: Clarify whether the service is provided by the company, a third-party contractor, or a national poison center

UFI Codes and Emergency Response

The Unique Formula Identifier (UFI) is a mandatory labelling element for hazardous mixtures in the EU under Annex VIII of CLP Regulation. It allows poison centers to identify products quickly during emergencies. The UFI code must be included on product labels and can also appear in Section 1.1 of the SDS.

UFI in the EU and UK Post-Brexit Changes:

This section plays a vital role in ensuring rapid and effective responses during chemical emergencies. Suppliers must prioritize accuracy, accessibility, and compliance when providing emergency contact information in their SDSs.
